A: Where is the fun in that?

Seriously, Snort is a good idea for an Intrusion Detection System; however, I've heard mixed feelings regarding its implementation. Besides, coding a solution from scratch is much more fun... and beneficial in terms of reuse or expansion of the code for other purposes.

nope, no snort here. The main reason why i am not running it, is cause this is more fun :-)

I like learning how stuff works and how i can personally create something to keep script kiddies off my networks...it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling seening script kiddy after script kiddy get blocked from my network ~because~ of my own code. I guess really, it all comes down to the challange and the thurst for more knowledge.

UPDATE: just checked my logs from last night, the code works perfectly.
