I think it is highly possible that there is life outside of earth. If you think about it, how did life on earth get started? And I don't think that earth is the only planet that has the ability to support a lifeform. There are other planets out there, even billions of lightyears away, therefore some of them planets or at least one must have the atmosphere to support a lifeform.

Finally, the last star blinked out, the last emission was emitted, and all was over. Then there was this ultimate action/thought, last sentence in the story, "Let there be light."
I recall that story. Humanity built progressively larger computers that had the task of working out how to reverse entropy. Eventually, the final computer works out the answer, but not in time to save humankind. Regardless, the computer carries out its duty; hence, "Let there be light."

What's the story called? I'm not too keen on rummaging through his 450+ books to find out...

Is it The End of Eternity by any chance?

I think extraterrestrial life is a very strong possibility, even a certainty. If one believes in a god, or group of gods, it stands to reason that it/they would not limit life to such a tiny corner of the universe. If you are an athiest like me, it seems likely that, given the sheer number of stars and planets life would have occurred on other such planets. Whether it is similar to terrestrial life or not would depend on the environmental factors involved, but given nature's 'try everything and what works, lives' approach, I believe intelligent life would be the eventual result for some of the ecosystems in question.

A thinking man cannot think God into existance.

No, it causes lightning. The beneficial side effect is that we can sell MJCrisps at Canton Trade Days.
