Open source and Free software in my opinion are two different things. Open source is the source code so you can edit and modify it to make it better. Free software is free available to be downloaded for example theGIMP, this is a free software program for editing images. Free software is a good thing if you dont know how to program but still some programs that are free make my job easier as a programmer.

@DaWei, good point. Like many things, the quality of software reflects the effort put into it. Although more effort can be put in by more people if it's free or open source.

Frankly, I was surprised at FlightGear. It was highly touted. I had not had a Flight Simulator since Win95, which was okay but not great. I opted for FlightGear. I had to wait out two revisions before I got one that worked (the first one had the panels upside down). Even at that, it's horribly slow to load (5 times FS, which is still slow). It exhibits glitches that are visually obvious (squashed aspect ratios amongst correct aspect ratios) and should be among the first things to be fixed. A sim engine with detailed graphics for terrain and detailed 3D objects to be rendered (or any other decent game, for that matter) is obviously a heavyweight project. I'm not so disappointed in its actual performance as I am in the less-than-upfront description of its abilities and quality. Oh well. Incidentally, it's not trash, I'm not saying that. It's just not tops. It enforces my opinion that people who are on top of their system's hardware and software, however poor that hardware/software may be perceived to be, will do better than those who are jacks of all trades.

Did I ever say Open Source and Free Software were the same damn thing? Please quote me where I said that! I understand the difference. It's like telling me XP and Linux are the same OS. NO! It's Not! No similarities are existing what so ever!
My point to a_thing was that a_thing and I were talking in a thread where someone was talking about Open Source and then lead to talking about free software. He makes a thread about free software when we were just talking about it. Maybe he wanted to have his little area to chat in but that was my point. Not Open Source and Free Software being the same thang!

Why does everyone jump to conclusions and get so pissed off about stupid little things? It is a forum were programmers come to share ideas and other information. Everyone needs to just chill out and enjoy themselves and others for who they are...

:o... not completly at XP. Linux operates a lot differently than XP. As far as I see it.
