Large groups will kill you if you try to starve 'em, but you can get away with it with a small enough group?

Okay, here's my point. Open source has benefits. It also has drawbacks. So it is with almost everything in life. Express your feelings about it. You have every right. Think about what you're going to express, don't just chime in with BS handed out by some high priest you're following around. Form your own opinions based upon what you know or have come to know, or you have received from a reliable source. Much of the technical gobbledegook you hear is absolutely no better than the shit you find forwarded into your email every day. Marshall your thoughts and speak rationally. I was gigging you, true enough, but not really maliciously. Eventually you will be in a climate where you are judged on your performance and your ability to adequately express yourself. Prepare for it. There are azzholes like me who will refuse to hire or will not continue to employ, that percentage of the candidates who are (OR APPEAR TO BE) in the lower end of the spectrum. Life ain't fair when you live by the cutting edge or the bottom line.

Hmmm, I think there is a slight difference in "Open Source" (source code) and "No Secret". There really is Open sourece crypotography/encryption. That means you are able to understand "how it works" and the "structures are free to use and distribute", but the information that is encrypted still isn't available for you to see (unless you have the correct key) and is a secret.
So in an open source government there still will be closed doors, secrets, esspionage, etc. But all the Laws, structures of government, and access to Use, distributes, and even alter such are Open.

Thought that was a fun statement though so I had to comment

Government isn't open for the same reason outhouses aren't open. No one wants to see the shit and have the stink escape.

That's why I put a filter on my mail that auto-deletes mailes that start with "FW: ".
Unfortunately sometimes the good stuff passes me by too. Sometimes when people forget me first time around and later forward it to me I still don't get the mail. Just another lesson how important it is to get things right the first time.

I just hit the "Junk" button - it works pretty well.

As DaWei said, open-source software has its benefits and its drawbacks. Obviously, the one real benefit to you, as a coder, is that experienced programmers, UI designers, database administrators and the FSM knows who else will (hopefully) end up chiming in with their contributions to your project. The drawback? It's a hell of a lot more work to make some money out of it. I'm not a fan of money, but it's kinda necessary.

I seem to be saying "As DaWei said" a lot... :p

There is a fine line between "fan of money" and "love of programming".

Well, I code mainly because I love it. Thing is, unless I'm contributing to society, society ain't gonna contribute to my stomach. And I get hungry really quickly.
