How do you make money in the software industry if everything is free? I'm a little curious on that one...

RMS used to support himself by having people pay to have a feature added to/raised on the todo list for Emacs. RedHat sells support contracts.

Got 'Nux?—GNU/Linux and other free software support.
It's GNU/Linux, not just Linux.

RedHat also sells their software. So much for free. (And yes, I know about the Fedora project.)

You can get their software for free from CentOS.

Bah, I like both, it's a skill, and people without it have to pay for it. That is the way it works. If everyone knew how to fix there car, then we wouldnt need mechanics. That is why some is free, and some isn't.

Mass-marketed public software, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop, occupies a fairly small niche in the software industry. The majority of the money in the software industry comes from creating custom software for businesses, such as stock-control systems, online shopping sites, etc.

Open source software draws money away from the former market, whilst lowering costs in the latter. Without open source libraries like the Jakarta Commons, and without open source applications such as Tomcat and MySQL, the software I create would take much longer to program. Indeed, we couldn't do half the things we do without open source software. Thus, in the bespoke software market, open source actually raises profits.

This is under Point one of the GNU Free Software Foundation General Public Liscense.

You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and
you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee

One of My favorite Open Source Projects is OpenRPG, Written in Python, coinsedentally it's Free, but the modification/distribution of it that is covered under the Liscense is the important part.

I'd highly recommnd everything that you "AGREE" to in legal definitions because seriously it's effecting you so you should be knowledgeable.

Also Look at the Copyleft information of GNU under the liscence section it's very informative

A person should be able to profit from their abilities, creativity, and original ideas, despite the fact that someone with lebenty-jillion dollars could tank them and exploit them, if allowed. That same person should be free to forego that profit, if they wish. Anyone who feels that those who work in the software industry should do so "for free" is welcome to do so "for free", but is not welcome to insist that others do so. Shoot, if one can find a market for senseless blathering, one is entitled to get rich from it.
