new laptop... any recommendations??

Hey guys. I know that there are a lot of very knowledgeable computer dudes on these forums, so I think this is the best place to ask for a recommendation. I am going to buy myself a new laptop, partly for school projects/note taking/etc, and partly to program on, using Java. I am a beginning programmer, but I would like a computer that can meet my needs even when I begin using multiple languages and know my way around the computer very well.

So... I guess what I am looking for is something that is well-priced, suitable for programming needs, and is somewhat well rounded (I have a wide variety of interests). Thanks in advance.

I just purchased this notebook a few months ago.

My needs were similar to yours, when looking for a labtop. Mainly for school, programming, and media stuff. I think its a good buy at a good price. I bought one and upgraded the memory to 1G. It does not generate much heat, weighs about 5lbs, and the 6 cell battery will last about 3-4 hours. And i know many people dont like Dell, but it hasn't been giving me any problems. So for a good notebook under 1k, i would have to recommend it. Oh and when i bought it, the offered no interest for 18 months! Couldnt pass that up. Good luck on the buy dude.

Lookin' at Jayme's good response, and just sayin'....
