I'd recommend picking up a copy of PHP and MySQL Web Development by Welling and Thomson. Failing that, the PHP Manual is pretty damn good.

I've always liked PHP for the world wide web: Visual Quickstart. As you may have guessed, it doesn't have a lot of length explanations, but it does a great job in covering everything. If I have the time I might write a review for it.
