Perhaps when someone can develop applications like web browsers, email clients, text editors, media players, etc. I think when fully understanding when that language can do and how to work with it's compabilities then one can say, "I know C++". Any one can say I know C++ and just develop a "Hello World" program, lol. I know as far as a little console programming in C++ but I don't bother saying I know the language. On a Resume, I would put "Novice knowledge of Java" or "Beginner - Intermediate knowledge of Java".

I've been programming with Java for several months, since early-October and yes I can create a drawing program, a text editor, an advanced metric converter but I would still consider myself a novice-intermediate (hardly that) Java programmer. I still don't fully understand "Multi-Threading" and "Networking" yet. And those are the major "need to know"'s about Java when it comes to programming in Java.

I used to use four levels of skill weighted variously by other important factors. An even number of levels mean you have to think about the person, you can't just toss someone in the middle.

Being a good programmer and having had experience with many other programming languages than C++ might make one proficient with C++ whilst not knowing C++ very well. My definition of knowing C++ is when one knows how to program in a way that C++ was meant for, making use of the programming paradigms in C++, using the STL, etc. I'd say I know some C++ but not a whole lot. When programming in C++ I do use the STL as far as I know it, but I haven't used maps, smart pointers, templates among others, so I wouldn't say I know C++ well, let alone master it.

Here on the forums, I would not put "I know C++" in my signature. I have had some experience with it though, so it's on my profile. On my resume I'd more easily put "I know C++" because I could likely learn that which I need to, plus they people hiring me might pay me more.

I've done multi-threading and networking in Java, but haven't had quite a lot of experience, so I'm no expert.

In the end I think that understanding the programming paradigms, which often comes through work experience is more important than knowing the syntax, and standard library of a specific programming language.

Which four did you use? I'm guessing it wasn't a list like:
0 - No skills
1 - Low skills
2 - Fair skills
3 - Good skills

"No skills" wasn't on the list, so I guess you COULD say there were an odd number of classifications. "Fair" and "Good" and such don't really hack it. You can divide at various reasonably obvious levels. Consider a secretary that claims knowledge of an office word processor. Surely they can type and set margins. Can they do a mail merge? Can they write a macro? Can they use a table effectively? That sort of thing. Depends on the language.

Well, at least he said 'April 2' instead of 'April 1' as his birthday. Think he's off by a day?

Just becouse you read a few books doesn't make you an expert on console programming. You should actually program all the time, an expert wouldn't be asking the questions you are asking. I recomend going back to your yahoo chatroom that you originated from and keep pretending like you know what your talking about.

Let's not descend into impoliteness and immaturity.

Well, let's not descend any further, at least.

Man, what is wrong with u people. Just because im not a 60 year old man doesnt make me stupid and ignorant. Even though i still didnt understand what u were trying to say.

I see many people got mad when i sad im a c++ console expert. I didnt actually mean im a c++ expert, i just meant i feel confortable with the language. I thought i was dealing with smart people who understood what i was trying to say...

Oh, and i founded a great site to get u started with windows api, if ur a biginner like. Check out www.functionx.com
And thx to everyone that gave a positive reply, all of ur links were great those that gave one.
