My suggestion would be use c:\wwwroot or \home\www instead of http://, I know that when I upload pictures i have to use \home\me\www instead of me.com/

Generally speaking the URL is used for things the client (outside world) accesses, the file system for server access.

That's fine. Your server is allowing external visitors to view individual files, but not to get a list of them. As PhilBon said, access it locally, instead of going through the web:

[php]$dir = '/images/hand/';[/php]

opendir() issue
