I would recommend PHP or Python or similar as a better starting place. When you get way down under the hood, then you'd probably want to introduce some C/C++. Perl was, maybe is, a good tool. Wall did a great job of keeping what was essentially a report generator in a position which was useful. However, technology marches on.

I want to learn Perl so I can create my own search engine. Is it possible to do that with PHP? I know C++.

Learning Perl is a great book by Randal Schwartz. It gave a good look into Perl. I was able to do a lot of system management on my Linux system with it. Perl is a very good language but as DaWei said PHP was created with the Web in mind and nothing.
PHP is the most popular web language to date. Perl is good for CGI but PHP is great. I just recently brought "PHP in a Nutshell" by Paul Hudson. It's great and very simple. |

I answered your question in my initial response. If it couldn't make a search engine, I wouldn't have brought it up. If I didn't think it was better, I wouldn't have said so. Perhaps those pieces of communication are too subtle.

Same here, I would not have mentioned PHP if I was not answering your question, if you prefer;
"PHP is a better language to develop a search engine in" This that better? |

Much better... DaWei some people aren't as old and dont speak in "old style" language and you come off as an asshole. You should explain youself in a simpler way that just stating things and expecting us to know what you mean. I dont mean to offend you but I express myself when I feel I need to. Sorry for that but that is just somthing that maybe you should look into if you dont want to be considered a grumpy geezer as some people would say..... Sorry if you took that offensively...
