I don't consider it a worthwhile tutorial at all. Strictly personal opinion, of course.

If the makers of hollywood movies were into programming, they would have done this.

I think whoever made it is just aiming towards "awing" the users.

I hope you realize that was the intention. The author of that site (also the author of a crazy online book called "Why's Poignant guide to Ruby") intentially wants to "awe" people. Ruby is not that popular, and this is a way to lure potential people in. It is supposed to be flashy and showy.

Agreed with Jessehk. I think it does a great job showing off the power of Ruby; regardless if you learn a lot or little. It certainly intrigued me to learn more. :p

Well like dawei said, it's personal opinion.

I would rather have to think about what I'm doing than be told "now type 'print 'hello'', dont forget the quotations, because you're just that stupid." :o

Well, I took a look. It's quite a neat little stunt, but I got pretty sick of the colourful disembodied patronising school teacher pulling me through line after irritating line of trivial code by the nose.

Great, I suppose, for someone who's never programmed before. Or gone to the toilet unaided.

Jessehk: you're not entirely right when you say Ruby's not that popular; it's quite popular in Japan for example, and its popularity is growing.

Personally I like the look of Ruby, though I've never taken the time to learn it and probably won't for at least a few months. Something tells me what the world (an more to the point, my career) needs now is not another interpreted "Rapid Application Development" language.

Thats not bad, it seemed a little slow (probably because i'm downloading a torrent) but it seems good for newbies. I think it lets people get stuck in straight away, instead of making new people download software, set it up and then read through pages of text.
