I believe that by "software", he means "WYSIWYG software". If you were being pedantic and already knew this, for god's sake, use the freakin' ":p" or "".

"Software" doesn't make distinctions like "this app" is and "that app" isn't. Software is a set of directions for the computer that isn't permanently embedded in hardware via either permanent storage mechanisms or wired logic connections. It's an important distinction one should conform to fairly closely. GUI, WYSIWYG, text, spoken instructions, those are more meaningful terms in the context you're addressing, I believe.

I use VI for writting the code, graphics i design using gimp. In the past i have used IDE's like Zend Studio, Dreamweaver etc...but found them more of a head ache than anything. It's probably more because i am so used to using vi. It really all comes down to what works for you. My boss can't stand vi, mainly cause he comes from a purly windows background.

Vi(m) has syntax highlighting for like 400 different languages (ls | wc gives 417 results for mine). It laso has the option of defining your own syntax if you need to. And yes, it does have ASP, PHP, and JSP. I would imagine emacs has similar syntax support, but I use Vim myself so I don't know.
