I started learning Visual Basic 6.0 using the book "Programming Visual Basic 6.0" by "Julia C. Bradley and Anita Millspaugh"

Another good source is "http://msdn.microsoft.com"

Visual Basic: Complete Reference is also another good source.

What you have to remember is, VB is in a way a RAD tool! Drag and Drop, create forms, code them and you have a quick and dirty applicatoin
Though, you can make pretty good applications as well!

Don't learn VB 6.0. Go with VB .NET instead.

Visual Basic was the first language (/tool, whatever) I learned, and it's a pretty nice way to start. I used Wallace Wang's Dummies-book to learn, and I remember it being rather good (for a beginner anyway, but probably not as reference or for someone already knowing other languages.)

It was one of my first languages as well, but now I realize it was a waste of time.

Microsoft is not going to support VB 6.0 for much longer. Learning the .NET platform is recommended as it's designed in a better manner. If you already know java, then you'll pick .NET fairly easily and rapidly.

You could begin with C#. If you have learned Java and C++, C# would be quite easy for you to understand.
VB. Net could then follow.

Its not just programming languages, that could make you a good programmer, but also a good analysis and solution designing for a problem is what you need to have as well.
