if you've never programmed before, this would be a great start. vb provides as much or as little crap as you want to put up with, plus you can have really fun results. i can code a VB pong game with neat graphics and shit in less time than i can code something "less fun" in a real language. like a program that adds fractions or some crap in c++. after that, do something else. i personally think adding fractions is more fun than pong, but i'm dorky. we actually had to do a pong game in class last semester, i think i was the only one to use trig functions to accomplish the task.

To the original poster: a lot of people have offered what seems like conflicting information. My personal recommendation would be to check out Visual Basic .NET (Visual Basic 2005 is also based on the .NET framework - they just dropped the ".NET" from the name). As others have said, it is a much better language - fully object-oriented and a lot more powerful. Microsoft will discontinue support of Visual Basic 6 soon, which means corporations should start to migrate to .NET. The Express Edition of the IDE is also free, unlike VB 6:

I just want to add that although I said that VB is a "nice way to start", that doesn't mean I think VB is better than .NET. In fact, I know very little of .NET, so .NET may very well be the better alternative. Also, the original poster later said that he already knows some languages, which makes the pedagogical reason for learning VB obsolete (although there may be other reasons).

Please give me any suggestions regarding how to start learning Visual Basic .
I would advise you not to go for VB 6.0, You'd better learn VB.net as this is the laguage that is a hot cake in the market as of now.
