Reading text from another app?

I was just wonderin if it was possible to code a program which will read text from another application running at the same time, such as a game or messenger app? If so, what would be the best way to attempt this?

Thanks

I thinks he means GUI, like in MSN the contact names. (If that's what he means with messenger?)

@OP: Which OS are you aiming at?

Windows OS. Sorry I wasn't clearer. This is what I mean - text that the user types or receives. For example, sent/received messages in a messenger app or an online game.

Thanks again.

Well if you mean to intercept network traffic, try sniffing there is a program called ethereal for windows it will grab any packets that go in and out of your computer.

Thanks for the help. I wanted to code a small app myself, which wouldn't intercept network traffic directly, but use the text that another program has received. Just wanted to know if anyone here had done it before and if they could point me in the right direction. eg which functions to use.
