I use KDE on my laptop, but I'm figuring on running Gnome on my desktop for a while to see how it shapes up...

This isn't a really a good comparison. KDE is a desktop that is rather more configurable than Windows is. Whilst Windows is aimed at the average computer user, KDE seems to be aimed at the poweruser who likes to have control over all parts of their desktop.

Gnome too, gives a lot of configuration options, but hides a lot of them behind the scenes, aiming to be as user-intuitive as possible. Gnome has a lot of human interface specs governing it.

When it comes down to it, KDE and Gnome have more in common with each other than they do with OS X or Windows.

I am not a linux guru, but I do run linux. I like KDE better for everyday use because it's a bit more user friendly, is better looking, and has a more windows-ish feel to it.

I have noticed that Gnome seems to be less laggy than KDE. The downside is that I find Gmone less user friendly.

I have also heard good things about the Solaris desktop environment. I am actually planning on testing out solaris on my laptop (since linux and windows wont work, and I flat out refuse to use mac). So I'll update later when I'm done with that.

As for the others, I don't really have any personal experience with them.

I find that to be just the opposite.

Last solaris I used came with gnome and the GDM as default. I think it was one of the frist open solaris releases. Granted, it was a damn nice version of gnome, but still gnome none the less

I prefer GNOME over KDE. GNOME is very very user friendly (IMHO) and gives the user a more customizable feel versus my experience with KDE. Then again KDE has that Windows look and don't get me wrong here. KDE looks nice but I just rather use GNOME on my Linux desktop. And Solaris I haven't given a test run yet. I heard a lot of good things about Solaris.

FVWM!

it's the beauty way to go eh! Takes a bit to get a nice theme going (you have to write the theme yourself most of the time), but once you have it, it's all good.

Wow I just looked that up, I must say I'm impressed by how it looks.

I prefer GNOME and Fluxbox. KDE looks too much like Windows, and my icons always seem to dissapper at the wrong time. I love GNOME because of the top panel. I also like Fluxbox because its lightweight.

The only problem I've ever had with GNOME is with rhythmbox freezing on me. But I attribute that more to Gstreamer than to GNOME itself.
