Please do not laugh about this it's a true story. This may be an extreme example but here it is.

Korea takes Action

Quote:
Whatever the reason, South Koreans are slowly but surely coming to terms with a social problem that could be a fair warning to the rest of the international online gaming community. (from link)
Now a lot of you who answered to my post are young. Maybe someone older than 30 can give me their opinion.

Does anyone here agree with me or am i the only one. I think i may have been brain washed.

Yeah fairdo's thats taking escapism to extreme levels. I read in the U.K news not so long ago of a couple that ignored their baby for long periods of time due to online games.

WoW is somethin else. I know 2 people that failed uni largly due to their addiction to WoW... one of which looks seriously ill most times when I see him recently. Sad thing is they were both top students aswell on their course.

Even one of my own course mates / best friend has a bit of an unhealthy addiction to it.

Personally, I play the odd bit of counter strike online. I can play as much as 15 minutes or several hours depending on how much time I have to spare. The main reason I play it nowadays is that I have some quality friends who'm most of which I know in real life aswell as online over the past 6 years. I dont play as much as I used to. an hour every other day at most... maybe 2. Too busy with Uni work, the missus and going out to the pub socializing these days than to be on a game all the time.

Games CAN be something thats becomes obsessive and detrimental to other things, but you make a very bad assumption if you think by taking away video games kids will read and do homework and all that 'good' stuff. A person who decides to spend all their time playing video games instead probably was going to find SOMETHING else instead of doing that homework, they are just using video games as the mean.

Don't blame the video games, blame the perpective kids and moral kids are being taught. I don't blame TV for turning a large amount of people into couch potatoes; I blame them for being lazy.

Honestly games fascinate me and are becoming vastly more complicated. Scoff at 'video games' as much as you want, they DO offer productive action. A hardback book isn't necessarily going to teach you more than a computer screen.

Do not blame the instrument for the users idiocy; don't blame video games for being lazy, but also don't blame entertainment for being entertainment. People have always sought entertainment and there is nothing wrong with that. Video games is becoming a major choice for that entertainment, .. so what.

I am 15 and I have been playing video games for around 5 years now (coming up on 6). I believe that video games are a waste of time, but a good use of a waste of time. :p It's better than sitting around being bored and doing drugs (IMHO). However, I do not see that there is anything wrong with playing video games, as long as it is done in moderation. (but every child who likes video games must experiance the fun of playing GoldenEye for Nintendo 64 all day at least once)

If you can convince a kid to go out and ride a bike or read or play some basketball instead of playing Bond, he/she will benefit in the long run.

Well, I have a question for you to take lightly: Does this decision come as a result of realising when you've moved onto the collegiate level that you're just not where you want to be compared to other people? Because it seems like a decision to ban video games for people under 18, when you just turned 18 is speculative in timing, and hastful.

My only thing is it has to be this, it's not anybody else's fault you're not where you want to be (maybe your parents). I'm sure if there wasn't responsible people under the age of 18 you wouldn't be trying to get back at them by adding competition (or as you see it, the yourself that can't).

When you become a parent, you'll have the choice of control for your kids. Whatever decision you want to make regarding change, should be done then when it's within your rights to do so, as much as I disagree with them.

Also, you're 18... if people aren't convinced that you have an inferiority complex yet, then they must be when they read that you asked only for people's opinions of 30 years of age or more... Get a life, kid. You're wasting your time.

I agree with you. I'm proud of myself that I was able to establish this fact early on and quite playing video games once I hit thirteen years of age. I'm glad I did, instead of being in the position where I'm saying to myself "Oh man, I wish I never wasted all that time". The only games I play now are those that are beneficial to your sensory input and health, like DDR and O2Jam.

It would probably only mean more when a more mature member of the forums tells you how hypocritical you're being, especially under the given circumstances. You say you've spent the better half of your life playing video games, but now that you turn 18 and the "laws" start to appear, you start agreeing with them. This "law" won't have any affect on you and I highly doubt you have children, so wouldn't you be excluded from this topic anyways?

I don't know which is more dangerous. Giving car keys to a 17 year old or giving them a controller and grand theft auto.. Some of the things people come up with are just so damn rediculous.

You guys are weird... your talking like if you play vids you can't be successful, which is retarded. I play a lot of video games, and I am very successful so far... video games don't make people fail at life... it's when your fucking lazy and all you do is play video games that makes people fail.

First off the only reason i say older than 30 was because they are generally wiser and have more life experience. Since this thread is all about life experience , i figured that some one older might be able to give their opinion as well.

Have you played video games for long periods of time before?

So you agree with me that it's a waste of time?

I don't know a single kid that is forced to play a game. They play games by choice, if it bores them even more than they originally were before playing, too bad.
