Hey yall. Assome of you may or may not know I made a messenger for a school computer club/class. The other day I asked my librarian if she could forward a port for me and she said no becuase sh coudlnt touch the router. Then she called in our IT guy and he said I would have to contact our ISP's DIS. Our ISP is k12.ar.us they provided internet to all arkansas schools. So I emailed them and they said sure. Well I went to school the next day and get in major trouble. The state called and the principal and superintendent talked to them a long timw. The state sent out security riskas and commented that my grammar sucked. lol. So now I'm in trouble and without a way to host it. If yall have any ideas where I could find a host or something or help me out in anyway. I still dont think I should of gotten in trouble though. They said the main reason was because I was a student. Thanks again.

If you can find an old computer- even a very old computer- you can boot linux on it and run it as a server.

That's retarded. You ASKED if you could do it and they said "yes". You could either ask around if some nice person can host a simple messenger server and convince them it takes up next to no bandwidth and doesn't include a virus. The alternative is talk to a not-so-big server company, one of the companies you can get in-touch with the "main guy" and ask him to host it for a bit. I have done this in a few situations. If I can get my brother to forward a few ports for me, I would be glad to host the server for you. That probably won't happen very soon though.

PS> The prices for a dedicated server(non-specific hosting) is usually 120-200 USD cheapest. That's including first months setup + monthly fee.

EDIT: I might also be able to convince a friend to host it for you. Everything would have to go through me though because he doesn't like giving out free servers. I'll be talking to him tomorrow so i'll talk to him about it. Do you know anything about bandwidth and cpu/memory usage, things like that?

Jayme, if you could do that it would be great. I ran my most used apps like Dremweaver, Dev- C++, VC++, vb8, VB.net 05, Fireworks, and 2 Firefox windows and it only used like 30% percent of my CPU, with all those programs + the Server and the messenger. It was still at %30 regualry. I logged it for like an hour and the most if got up to was 34%

As for bandwidth. The EAST club is in Cali, Arkansas Illionis, missori and 1 other sate I think. So it would mainly depend on how many students ACTUALLY used it.
