Computer Science Prereqs - Math

Hey yall. I just got a call form my high school counselor and it turns out I've been kicked to take free Computer Science prereqs at a local college after school.

But firtst I hav a few question whether or not I should accept or decline and below I'll tell yall why. I love compuiters and before I only liked Neworkign A+ and stuff like that. Then I got into programming and and started to like it and thats when I decided I would like to go into CS. Now before I started programming I flunked all my math classes. I was in a "special class" lol. But since I've started programming I've pass all my math classes for a 77 or higher. The math classes I have taken are Algebra 1, Algebra A, Algebra B, and Geometry. Now since CS is alot about theory and programmign and you have to know what every little piece of code does. I know I'll have to do ALOT of math probably. Like Trig, Pre Cal, Cal 1 and Cal2 and any other math some greek guy made.

So my question is. Should I take theis chance and get to goto to college for free (prereqs anyway), or should I go back to A+ and Networks and do p[rogramming as a hobby or something. I really want to do CS, but I'm afraid I will not pass my mathe classes. Please help me out with what I should do.

Well, here at my school, taking a year of calculus is a prerequisite for applying to the CSE department, and once in the department, there are a few math classes and math-intensive classes that are required. CS is a lot about theory, but the theory is largely mathematics based, so yes, you'll want to be good at math. Then again, having someone pay for your education is never a bad thing...

I'd accept the offer, otherwise you will be wondering about the "what-ifs"... Computer Science is fairly math-intensive, the people who couldn't handle the math normally ended up in Management Information Systems or something similar in the business school. Most of all of your majors in the engineering departments will be math intensive.

I had straight As in my math classes in high school, but slipped to low Bs and Cs in college level math. Here are some of the classes that I remember that were either required or used to fulfill mathematics electives at the college I attended:

College Algebra
Trigonometry
Calculus I - IV
Probability and Statistics
Differential Equations
Linear Algebra
Mathematical Computing
Number Theory

Damn, thats alot of math.

I thought about it and I think I'll go ahead and do CS. I want to do it and if I don't get it I'll stuidy harder till I do. Thanks yall

I dont really want to do Management Info systems. I'll go ahead and try CS and do A+ and Network stuff to just incase I cant pass the CS prereqs. lol

Good choice. You'll never know unless you try. No point in giving up before you've started! If you need any math help, I'm sure people on the forums can help you, and though it's been four years since I've touched the subject, I might remember enough to suggest some things, too

Computer Science is different from programming, but I think it is handy to learn. It teaches you things that you may not have thought to study on your own, which is always rather useful in a subject.

I say go for it, just because it's free.

But i'm in a similar situation, I'm an all around computer geek, I do stuff with programming, hardware, theory, etc. And when I went to pick my major CS or CIS seemed very much a possibility, but I hate math with a passion, so I took the Web Development major instead. Right now i'm in AlgebraII, the last math class i'll ever have to take in my life

Well, maybe I'm just bragging here, but I have a deep love for math. I get such joy out of prooving a trigonometric identity, or solving a geometric problem, or solving an equation (I guess my mark reflects that).

Programming is pretty closely related (in my opinion), as it is based on logic, and problem-solving. In that way, I'm sure that if you took the course, or continued programming, your math skills would improve.

I'm not a math fan (to say the least), but I took everything I could get. It's something you just get through as well as you can (like measles or something). Engineers just need it. I did have a friend like Jesse, he proved the chain rule every time he took a crap.

That was the case with me. I remember being in high school algebra and the guy was talking about matricies and going "what is the point"? Now, I use multidimentional arrays all the time and it makes sense. Same with stuff like "n = n - 1". I never got it till I started programming.

So CS isnt computer programming? The college that is offerign it I have to take a bunchd of Software engieering sand programming classes. If CS isn't Programming and making programs for businesss and being on a team that makes stuff for compnays to sell not noron AV mcafee, and stuff like that. I dont want it. Thats what I want to do.
Program and make stuff for people. So what should I get to where I can do that?
