Method Help - Web Programming Suggestions

Hello All,

I am not new to web page development in html, but now I need to learn some web programming. The reason is because we need interactivity with the visitors. We want to create a member's area and give the members the capabilities to edit their profile and other information associated with their membership and then make this information available in our public pages. Also, we want to provide some paid services that they can add to a shopping cart and pay through an online payment method.

To be upfront, I do not know where to even start. I know that I will need database(s). But, what would be the best method in creating the utitlies behind the scene for the profiles and other interactivity? I have been looking around at PHP and MySQL, but cannot find information that points to the types of things we need to do here.

If you can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

GoJoe

I would say you're on the right track with PHP and MySQL. I would recommend getting a good book that combines the use of both. There are a number. Some of them will even implement a complete system of one sort or another that involves full use of the things you are talking about. If you follow through from beginning to end you will have a wide understanding of the general concepts.

I have the book - PHP and MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson. So far it has been great. The only problem for me is that I haven't gotten a certain function to work for me, and I tried to fix it, and now my server is broken

But, that has nothing to do with you. Yes, PHP and MySQL is a great way to go.

I'd second that book - it's great.
