Looking for book recommendations

I am looking for a good Java book that includes Swing and the basics of JSP. I am familiar with C++, C#, VB, but have never used Java, so I feel it's time to become familiar with it as well.

I am looking at "Java How To Program" by Deitel. Is anyone familiar with this book? Is it a good choice? Or are there other books that you can suggest?

If you already know your way around C++ and C#, then I think Deitel's books will help you get familiar with the syntax rather quickly. I may be a bit biased though.. I love Deitel's books.

Advanced Java2 Platform by the same authors is also a good book for learning some of the more advanced aspects of the language.

Yes, I have that book right it front of me now. I love it, it's great and it's worthless every cent I paid for it! I going to get Advanced Java 2, when I am done this book. I use it a lot and its my best reference! I definitly recommend it!

I also own the book "Deitel - Java How to program" which I think is good, but after you get into the java syntax, you may find it a bit slow and skip some pages due to repetition. Other than that, for beginning to learn java, "Thinking in Java" is also very good and available online for free. A list of mirrors can be found here

Go with the 6th editition, there is a bunch of changes to help get you into java 5. Plus the order is a little different. But that is deffintaly the book to get if you have the 80 dollars to fork out for it.

6th edition is the one I'm looking at. I'll probably get it then, as it sounds like a favorite. Thanks for your help!

My first post on this forum was a java reccomendation post

I have to reccomend Java: A Beginner's Guide by Herb Schildt. It's the easiest reading java book i've ever come across. It doesn't teach you any GUI stuff, but it's easy to follow and good for getting a grasp on the language. Great if you're a n00b to java or programming in general.

The 2nd and 3rd edition are really similar, go with the 2nd if you can get a really great price on it online somewhere.

Head First java is also supposed to be great, but I have't read that one yet

To be honest, I wanted to learn GUI of Java also not just the basics stuff with text! Java, How to Program teaches you the basics and shows you have to create Input Prompts, Pop-up boxes, etc in the first chapters! I loved how it did that! "Java: A Beginner's Guide" to me wasnt really "All That!". I had to re-read pages when I didnt get the explanation of things but it happened a lot even after reading Java 2 for Dummies, which I think it a good beginning book but not the best b/c it makes you import their classes instead of what's in the API. So far, I prefer "Java, How to Program". Its easy to understand, HEAVY, and fun!
