I agree. Universities pretty much focus on HOW programming works. If you want to learn a slew of languages and be taught by someone, then a technical college would probably be ok. I earned a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science and when I look back at it all....they basically only taught me one language. They focused so much on Java and the concepts. Sure...I took classes that were involved with other languages, but it was different. The first week of my C++ class we had to do a project, and no one really knew any C++ ...but since we all knew Java we had to research the differences ourselves. I basically wrote the program in Java and then opened a book on C++ and translated it. Once you do that a few times, you wont need the book anymore. No one knows every single option about every single language. I dont care who you are, its not possible. But thats why we all use the internet and books for references!

I'm debating on whether or not to get my MS. I do want to get it, but I cant right now. My job is actually sending me through a CCNP class right now. Maybe once I obtain that I will go back to a university for a MS.

Oh yea...and as far as getting a job goes.....as previously mentioned, on your resume you will have what degree you earned and from where. You will also list a set of languages that you know. You aren't going to say "Java from school, C++ from my mom's friend, PHP from reading online"

If you tell them that you know a language, and they are looking for someone with knowledge in that language....they will have a programmer there call you and ask you some questions over the phone or do so when you come for an interview.

I was looking at a job that wanted someone to program in Java from time to time, they had the current Java programmer call me to ask me questions and guage my knowledge.

When I'm using PHP, I have to look up a couple of commands every now and then, CSS as well.

I think if someone knew everything about everything their head would explode... or at least they would have really bad headaches.
I wish everyone who was smarter than me would have head aches all the time...

Even the people that "invented" or created the code have to look things up from time to time. One of the biggest things I can stress is that you make sure that whatever job you take, or career path, make sure you make time for yourself. You've got the rest of your life to work, make sure you enjoy life.
