Stupid Windows, stupid DVD-RW drive
Gah, my stupid Windows and DVD-RW drive have teamed up to make me angry. The stupid drive has decided to not read any media whatsoever, and part of the problem is a Windows hotfix that I don't have. I had this issue once, and the drive started working again, but upon installing Daemon Tools and creating a virtual drive, the DVD-RW drive pitched a hissy fit and "died", in essense.
I know this is not programming related, but the dell support people will not give me an answer that works. I really need my drive back so that I can burn a bootable cd for a Linux distro. Has anyone else ever had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? The drive is a NEC DVD-RW 1100-A model. Thanks.

I have an NEC, works great. Try ditching Daemon tools and use Alcohol 120% instead

I've had CDROM drives die before. If you have another computer, try putting the drive in it to eliminate the possibilty of the fault being your machine. If it is a dead drive, request Dell replace it.
You may also want to try a different IDE cable or IDE channel. Also check your BIOS to make sure it's properly recognized and not registering as something else. I remember reading something a while back about Daemon Tools interfering with other operations while a virtual drive is active. I don't remember if this was for a specific OS though (I was running Win2k and didn't have a problem). Try disabling the virtual drive, turning off daemon tools, and restarting. |

What version of D-tools do you have? If you have the new one (V4 I believe) you might try the old one (3.47), otherwise try the other way around
.If that doesn't work then try deleting the drivers of your dvd drive.

I had version 3.47, because I didn't want to get version 4. (adware). I tried to update the firmware on the drive, but it was the same type. Grrr. At least I can still get into Beatrix Linux through VMware, but I'd much rather be able to boot to it through cd.

There's no adware in version 4, not in mine at least.
