I say that you should just start with C++. Don't start with C - that's what I did, and it took a bit of work to get used to OO. I still haven't grasped everything yet. There are a few good books out there, but don't get C++ For Dummies - it's crap. I'm sure someone else can recommend something - I haven't had much luck with decent material.
I recommend SAMS Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours or SAMS Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days. I have Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours, and let me
say that it's a great book. It's just a great book - what can I say?

I must be a dinosaur... I started in the BASIC, BASIC-A, XBASIC environments... lol*
I started in GWBASIC on an ancient monochrome I inherited from my step-sister. x) ...which I don't advise, by the way.

So it's not all bad! XD

I failed to mention my GWBASIC days... oops. I was also there in the orange text and black background days.

I agree about the SAMs books... they normally provide some very good documentation.

If you want to learn to program, your best bet would be to go with something like Python or Scheme. The interactive environment is a god-send for the curious and inexperienced. I don't appose to you learning a lower-level language like C++(lower, not low :-P), but if all you want to do is learn to program, this would just make the process slower and a tad harder. If this is the road you want to take, by all means, go for it. I have a rather large array of SAMS books, and all I can say is that the orginization watches its accuracy(which is not good). I would recommend the books C++: How To Program, by Deitel & Deitel and The C++ Programming Language for a ANSI conformant reference.
