Hi All,

I am currently working as Windows Systems Administrator.

The reason for this post is , I have plans to move into Software Development in the comming months , In this process I want to learn good programming skills. I do not want to go with market demand .

My main goal is to be a real programmer who has the ability to learn any new programming language in very less time. This is because in my carrer I have seen very less developers who can do this and I want to be one of them.

All said , I need your help in choosing my first programming language . I appriciate guidelines to achive my target rather than debating on which is good programming language. I am writing this after reading many post on the same topic. None of them could really help me so far. I am totally new to programming and most important thing I want to be good in programming concepts in next 5 months so that I will be able to take up tough decisions in regard with my carrer.

IR is right, but missed one, C#. I'd go for Python since that will get you good programming habits.

I'd also have to recommend Python. It provides good structure for beginners, has a pretty simple syntax, and allows you to learn without getting bogged down in low-level details.

Python provides a very good overview of how to program, and there's no shortage of tutorials for people without previous programming experience.

What's wrong with learning low-level stuff?
IMO, the more you know about the low-level stuff the more productive you can be at a higher level.

Nothing, but it helps to have an understanding of programming before you do so.
Hm. This rather depends on what higher level language you're programming in. I can't think how low level programming experience would make you a better Python, Lisp or Ruby programmer.

Oops. I always suggest C#, not sure how I missed that... but the majority would suggest either C++ or Python.

Well, I don't know why this is in the C section...

After taking the time to learn C++, learning new languages has been very easy.
If you want an initial challenge, then a break, I would learn C++.

Otherwise, learn the (easy) python.

I have posted here because . I wanted to hear the sugesstions form C developers. C programming done in my graduation 4 years back is the only prog experience I have.

I have come to the situation where I would like to move to development from Windows Systems Administration(after 6 months from now ) and before that I wanted to learn good programming first and then move to the high end , in demand (Java or c# ...etc) languages.

If you're experienced in C, try picking up C++. Just remember that the way you were taught 4 years ago isn't always the best way.
