I am looking to learn the Language so when a need for it arises, I know what to do and how to do it. but my goal is to learn Java quickly and without paying $$$$ for it in school later on.

My Goal now is to learn Java and Program a Java 2D game to test what I have learned. I am a bigineer, but not a dumb one. I know what I am doing. I read books about Object Orianted Programming before I even started, so I have a basis for what I am doing.

I also Looked at C++ a while back a go. about 2003. If I had started then, I am sure I would have grasped something by now. but I did not want to do it then because it seemed complicated, I was 16 too, and I did not want something comlicating to learn. I wanted something easy and fast to learn. well, after telling myself start working on Java, I started doing Java and writing codes, Modifying codes and so on, but it did not work for me, so I left by 2004..... Then my life came in and I got job. now that I am free of everything. I can devote time to learning Java.

I don't whole lot about Java and I want to learn at good pace. I don't want to cramp everything in 3 weeks or 5 weeks. I want to steadily increase my knowlodge week after week, and day after day.

It's punk actually, Rancid to be more precise. Sidekick. Not one of their best songs, but I like it for some reason.

i learned java and liked it a lot...

but i just had my industrial training, and it seems to me the industry still uses C/C++, especially when dealing with firmware. Probably for its speed.

Java is probably too slow for these application, and maybe more applicable for net applications. However, there's Ruby on Rails coming up (if that's a language) which claims will overtake Java soon.

So, i'm kinda dissapointed with Java, don't think i'll be big in the future. Just my opinion.

As far as the industry goes, every language has its use.... I would say C/C++, C#, and Java run close to the top as "need to know" type of languages. Java isn't going anywhere soon, the concept of Ruby taking it over is funny at best. For that matter, I was just handed down a task to be coded in none other than Java/XML... after years of C/C++ and C# tasks. argh. I don't particularly care for Java, but its also not a good idea to just say... "it sucks". Flexibility in learning languages and migrating with the new technologies is a must in my opinion.

Partially for it's speed, partially because the software industry has a very strong herd instinct. People choose the languages which everyone else is using, not necessarily the language which is best for the job.

Ruby is slower still than Java, although for most web applications, cutting edge speed is not required.

Rails is a web application framework programmed in Ruby, which is really rather good at helping design web applications quickly and without fuss.
