Favourite Linux Distribution
I'm not really sure where to post this, so I decided to post in the Lounge... I've been searching the internet, and these forums kind of looking to see what Linux distribution is in general the favourite one. I have always used Windows, and I am hoping to try out Linux, and hopefully learn a bit more about it through experience. Right now I have Red Hat 9 installed on my computer in a small 6 GB partition, but I'm about to get a new 320 GB drive and I will use my old 80 GB drive for Linux. I'm just wondering what you guys think is the best or your favourite distribution. I thought I might try Slackware, it seems like a popular one. But I'm brand new to Linux, so I don't really know how it works. Red Hat seems a bit messed up though, I can't seem to run these .rpm files to install OpenOffice or my video card drivers.
Thanks in advance, MrMan9879 |

Kubuntu is a good linux for starters. Easy to install, and comes with most basic things that one might need in an OS. Slackware is not exactly "newbie friendly", i still can't get it to install

Kubuntu is a version of a popular distrobution called Ubuntu. The difference is in desktop environments ( the way you browse files, navigate around your computer, the programs, and the look of your desktop. ) Ubuntu is GNOME (http://www.gnome.org) based, while Kubuntu, made by the same company, is KDE (K Desktop Environment) based (http://www.kde.org) (K)Ubuntu is largely considered an excellent beginner's "distro".

Ubuntu is the ebst for Beginners, or Vlos. I have not used Ubuntu but i ehar its very simple and easy on beginners. Vlos I STILL use, despite is simplicity it is still my favorite distro. Here are their links.
I'm assuming your in the U.S. so heres the U.S. downlaod mirror >> http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/ To download Vlos you must also downlaod and install "BitTorrent" www.bittorrent.com Then download the Vlos torrent file form this link, the first post their, you click the "torrent:" link >> http://forums.vidalinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=7668 After you've downlaoded the Vlos torrent file double click it on your desktop and it should start downloading in BitTorrent. GoodLuck with the install. Both those distros. are great, I highly recommend them. If ya need help message me on aim at indiepopguru Cheers -Nebula ![]()

Thanks for your help everyone, I'll probably try Kubuntu, and then see where it takes me. I've heard that SuSE is good, so I may try that too. |

You could start with Knoppix 4 (recent) LIVE CD...and based on that you could choose a Debain Distro.
Try out Fedora Core 4 ...or SuSe

personally i dont like the redhat/fedora series. you'll get a lot of heat for using suse, especially in more professional environments, at least in my experience. but suse is forever my favorite. suse 10 recently came out, like $60. or you can get opensuse for free.
i like gentoo too, but its very difficult for a beginner to install. for beginners i'd also look into xandros and mandriva.
