BlueJ is cool because it has an easy way of mapping out your application so that you can see everything and has a nice editor. It does write a lot of code for you (as far as constructors and backbone stuff), I prefer to write everything myself but it's a good learning tool. Like jGrasp, it's authored by a university.

I like JCreator the best -- mostly because that's what I'm accustomed to. Nevertheless, it is a great editor, and while I've noticed a couple of miniscule bugs, it works fabulously 99% of the time.

textpad4 - nice and simple to use
step 1) type code
step 2) ctrl+1 - compiles code
step 3) ctrl+2 - runs your compiled code

JCreator - this is a freakin awesome Editor thanx to Mjordan2nd's for recomending it

When I first saw this thread, I thought the OP was asking about some kind of visual editor for laying out AWT/Swing components, heh.

I too use JCreator, not because it's better than other editors (as I haven't used other ones), but because it's a) free, and b) what my college uses.

BlueJ does give you some code to start with but you can always get rid of that and start from scratch and just use BlueJ to map out your programs
