Linux vs. Vista == Linux vs. XP?

Not a very long post or a debate, but I wanted to know how our PF members think about upcoming vista.
I think in my opinion Vista is like an armored version of XP, not an entriely new technology like how 98 to NT(2000 etc.) has been like. Perhaps a boosted upgraded version of XP. (Obviously)It's still a closed OS, but its support and desire to let their customers do what they want to do without any technical skills(in plain business sense) seems great. I like the general GUI and the smart voice recognition system, which I think it's a real powerful thing too, in comparison to linux today. But at the end I like linux better in terms of control of my OS and more technical experiences, because what I can gain, linux has that potential.

Wow wow, vista is a huge over hall, Bill is currently implementing all sorts of stupid things like monitor compatability so that you can only watch dvd's from your region on them. And graphocs card compatabilty. aparently so you can always garantee compatabilty. Sounds like he's extending his monopoly. And tring to run linux down from this because hardware manufacturers will be aiming for vista compatabilty becaus it's a bigger market. Im staying away from vista for as long as possable. But dosnt look like were going to have much choice.

From what I heard that's not the case at all. It only affects HD dvd and even then you can still watch it, but not at full quality. Like I said, this is only what I heard. *shrug*

Interesting how Bill's thinking all these innovative stuff to bog down other markets.
It seems like, there is more pressure into linux/unix development, which I think is good in a way, because if there's more pressure, there could be quick improvement to the system,- with linux/unix community's commitment. in my opinion linux/unix, is the original that needs to be maintained in its own style, "the originals", separate from shouts like (emotional sense)"linux is better!, no windows is better!"(away from technical comparisons), I think it's more effective to consider unix/linux as a way of learning about OS, and using it as a personal tool, to expand knowledge about development, and windows could be something that's more general use as public, for "quick get things done when it needs to be done when I want it to be done"(education, business etc.), not that linux has great potential to do it. I'm speaking in terms of today's situations and how things might happen in the future of MS and penguin markets, but if penguin tends to climb up the windows quickly(perhaps to the rooftop), it surely going to make difference to this, I believe it will soon, only vista is in the way.

Well I think Windows XP Pro was as good as windows is going to get (playing games), and its gonna be a long while before anyone will upgrade just for some eyecandy (all the vaguely appealing things such as a database file system, enhanced process scheduling, etc were scrapped) and a shitty "security" system called Indigo that's so flawed and buggy that the only bit that'll probably work well will be the bits restricting rather than protecting users like DRM. May XP will be conveniently leaked just like the portions of windows 2000 source code useful to samba; Microsoft are poaching a lot of open source developers...

Inbuilt multiple desktops would be something on my wishlist for Windows. It's the feature I most miss about Linux when I'm at work.

The thing i most miss about linux when i am at school is the bash. I will give a try to vista, because in my school they love M$ and apps developed for its "systems".
But i cannot work on windows anymore, is too restrictive, but in my sister's computer i have installed cygwin and when i have no choice but to work on linux i don't miss much.
Well i also miss multiple desktops, indeed.

I'm not the only on here who has got to use a vista beta am I?

Haveing used it vista....
- The interface is much more mature than its XP counterpart. The hearders ase more compact and the colors arnt as bright.
- The whole file system is increadably confuseing. You open "My Documents" and there is eather nothing in it or compleatly random crap. Aparently the "My Documents" Is compleatly gone and it pulls form all folders. Or something like that.
- Then new "faster" start menu is a great Idea but its windows so it never runs fast when you need it to.

I liked it but you still have "security center" and SP2 BS like that. One of windows biggest flaws is something I need to start working on my self. You cannot set the defaults to make everyone happy. So target one group only and let the other groups screw with their prefrences all they want.
