Graphics help

We're currently working on the Element user interface and we're having a slight problem. We need a nice background and some images for the buttons. Now we have some backgrounds but they're not the greatest.

Also, each button uses two pictures. For a button called close_btn, we have: close_btn_low and close_btn_hi where the first one is the original image and the second one is the same as the first but brighter to indicate that the button is selected.

If anyone is interested, just say and i'll post more information.

Here's a sample set(red is the transparency key meaning it will appear as transparent):
Attached Images
File Type: gif background.gif (36.3 KB, 57 views)
File Type: gif red_circle_btn_hi.gif (3.4 KB, 56 views)
File Type: gif red_circle_btn_low.gif (4.1 KB, 57 views)

Can I suggest using PNGs? Oh, and red_circle_btn_hi.gif has a square.

Allow me to echo Ooble's sentiments: What's stopping you from using png? It has an alpha layer for transparency so you don't need a key.

Also they're really quite large, but I am biased to small, clean interfaces.

And since it's named Element, maybe you could run with that with the graphics? Fire wind water and whatnot?

- all the images Are png.
- red_circle_btn_hi.gif has a square because it was 2:00AM when i commited. (BTW, the images on the CVS are just for show, all used images are compiled to the exe from a resx file)
- Keys are used for the form background ONLY. PNG alpha layer doesn't work on the form backgournd.
- I see y'all got some nice and creative ideas, why not help out a little.

Here's what we need at this point:
- three 25x25 pixels images for the control box: one close button, a minimize, and a maximize button windows style.
- Signin button and Send button with reasonable sizes
- Two nice background images: one for the long forms(similar to the image attached above) and one for the chat window.

Can I suggest wrapping a black circular edge/border around the circle in the background image?

I don't know how to do that. I have photoshop cs2 and it so damn complicated. You're free to modify the existing images if you want.

You could even do it in Paint. Just select the circle tool. And draw a black circle (no fill) over top of the existing one...

I strongly advise an XML config for skins.

@Sane: Oh, you're talking about the little circle. Yeah i can do that, but i can't wrap the whole image because paint doesn't have a round edge rectangle.
