That would be me ... using a short a doesn't seem to make sense.. sounds like you're saying "kair" instead of "char".

That is funny, Bjarne Stroustrup preaches the exact opposite from his AT&T site. I was shocked because I would've thought it would be pronounced like the word from which it was derived, but he claims it is generally pronounced like charcoal.
Quote:
How do you pronounce "char"?
"char" is usually pronounced "tchar", not "kar". This may seem illogical because "character" is pronounced "ka-rak-ter", but nobody ever accused English pronounciation and spelling of being logical.
(the last two lines of the webpage)

I reckon it could have to do with his danish roots

What about 'ioctl'
My boss says "eye owe kottle", although, I've never heard another way of saying it.

Also, the program 'ethereal'.
"ether real" OR "e thee ree al"

Personally, I put the accent on the second syllable of ethereal. And I just say, "I O control". I couldn't bring myself to say "tchar" if Stroustrop came after my cojones with a filet knife.

Lol, I think maybe LBJ invented that one, but I'm not sure.

i've seen those weird pronunciations flaunted in microsoft books (along with the normal ones).

sorry for getting off-topic, your tutorial was very good and insightful. one of the best ways to learn something really well is to teach it.

I'm in the "tchar" group and ioctl is (almost) always "I O control".

Also I think C++ is pronounced "C" the first time you say it, then "D", "E", etc from then on. Unfortunately, without a reset, I now segfault everytime I have to say it.

This should have gone in the programming tutorial section.

I wonder if someone could also provide a similar tutorial on Java. I have forgotten almost everything! :-(

If you increment a character past (char)255 it just goes back to (char)0 , no segfault... :p
