Visual c++ 2005 express

Im trieng to work through a book that uses visual c++ (6.0 i think) but I have 2005 express edition. I cant find out how to compile normal c++ code, that runs in the dos window. Can some one tell me how to either compile normal c++ or get an older version of vc++ (prefably 6.0) please?

Select "File" | "New" | "Project" (indicates cascading menus)

In the left pane of the resulting dialog, select "Win32"
In the right pane select "Win32 Console Application"
In the "Name" blank at the bottom insert a name. This will be copied to the "Solution Name" blank.
Click "OK".

Read the resulting dialog box and click "Next".
In the new dialog box, make sure "Console Application" is selected.
Uncheck the "Precompiled Headers" box.
Click "Finish".
