i've always used jcreator. i've only tried netbeans so far, but it seemed to confuse the crap out of me. i like to code things myself, then i know where my code is and where to find things. i suppose with a visual thingy, it's a lot asier to put your components where you want them.

What my eclipse says ; "Infinite Posibilities". You can get all things in eclipse. Start from visual designing for java desktop application to designing JSF and many more.... (svn,cvs,laszlo.......)

The thing about editors like Eclipse is they are great if you already know the language. Trying to learn a new programming language in a really heavy/powerful editor can make things a whole lot more of a hassle.

I've become a linux user over the last four years or so, and frankly, I just use vim and compile on command line. Although I have been meaning to learn Eclipse. I hear it's even got CVS build-in capabilities.

Anyhow, point I'm trying to make is if you're just starting out with your first "hello world" program me thinks that something like Eclipse is going to be a bit heavy. But hey, if you can actually learn the language and a powerful editor at the same time you are good to go!
