w00t use Gaim. Seriously,
+using one program i can use MSN, AIM, yahoo, googletalk and IRC in one Window! (How sexy is that?)
+it is OSS
+it isn't a microsoft product
+it's free
+it has plugins (and you can create your own)
+it allows you to sign in with more than one account of a certain type. eg: i can use 3 AIM accounts if i like
+it's multiplatform

kthnxbye

There's another text-based one out there. Uses msnlib, a Python library (albeit a bit of a low-level one) for connecting to the MSN protocol.

Isn't that the one that says "The user has exited the coversation window" or something like that everything it times out? If so, is there a way to turn that off?

Nudges and winks... they both annoy me, and winks block my system. I use aMSN.. it supports avatars + custom emoticons, the only thing i miss is the personal message.

I never really used any of those options (nudges, personal message, etc). So Gaim is perfect for me!

Gaim for *nix, and Trillian for Windows. Easy. I'd love to see a decent terminal-based app that worked on both, just because of the coolness factor.
