Are applets worth learning?
I'm starting on Java,
I don't do much web developing, i like normal applications more. I want to know if it is worth learning to use applets too. |

I would say write an applet that displays the Olympic Rings and be done with it until you actually have to write an applet for something.

It's an easy way to do some graphics programming when you're learning Java anyway. You can run them using appletviewer, so you don't have to do it on a webserver. The way you create an applet or make an application are very similar, so it's a good tool to have in your toolbelt. I'd suggest trying some simple applets (java.sun.com has good tutorials) and understand how they work, then when you'll need to write one one day, you'll have the basics down.

there is an applet on that page, when i see that page it says click to install plugin, when i go thru the wizard it tell me it wont work and i have to manually install it. So i manualy installed it and it doesnt work. |
