hrmmlooks right. never worked with Java 5, but try the readme in the /usr/java/jre1.5.0_04 directory. There's probably some stuff on the plugin in there

Did you go to Edit-->Preferences-->Web Features and checked the "java Enabled" box. If nothing works, I suggest using Opera because it detects Java automatically. All you have to do is point it to the file.

Back on topic: you might as well learn how to write Java applets; it's just one more class you're going to have to learn your way around really, and everything else is the same as using Java for 'real' programs. Just my two cents.

Oh, and uman: I don't know where you get these crazy notions about Windows. How can a pattern of ones and zeros be worth any money? I mean, man, you just /bought/ a /number/ - and you don't even own it. And yet you say it's not too expensive? It's amazing what some people would rather have than money.

As for this rumour that Windows is better for normal desktop use; my computer illiterate mother switched to SuSE Linux from Windows 98 and has never looked back; she /likes/ the computer now. She says it's better looking (KDE), easier to use (mainly OpenOffice, kmail and Mozilla), and more reliable (not one problem in three or four years now).

I mean, what is it about Windows' ugly UI, flaky performance, uninformative error messages and unhelpful help system that makes it "better for normal desktop use?"

I would say NO.

Just learn Java. Applets are being replaced by better technologies like AJAX. But Java lives.

Depends on what you want out of a desktop. Windows is far less flexible than Linux, and despite many hours trying, I've never been able to get multiple desktops working under Windows as well as Linux natively supports them. KDE is just so much more customisable than Windows; I feel frustrated every time I find yet another thing that's easy to do with KDE, but difficult/impossible to do with Windows. I'm too much of a power-user for Windows.

Also, have you tried loading up any Java applets that are known to work, ColdDeath? Though, quite honestly, I've been a Java programmer for several years and I've never bothered learning how to program applets; I've honestly never come across a situation where I'd want to use them
