Exclamation software engineers Job oportunities??

Hey.. my 2nd post ..lol..

so i'm new to programming and im going to start my last year at school soon and i was considering the possibility of studying computer science (software engineering) in university. But my father sayd that ALOT of ppl take computer science nowadays and that the possibilities of getting ajob in a good company is very low. what do u guys think? yes ? no?

And do u think its too late for my to consider studying sofware engineering now that im already in my last year and i dont have the good foundation of a programmer or can i make up for lost time and still become a good programmer.

thx

Welcome to the forums. Now to answer your questions:
It's hard to start a career in software engineering because most companies require at least one year of experience. Just go to careerbuilder.com and search for "programmer" and you'll see what i mean. So, if you decide to become a software engineer, try your best to get an internship or coop before you graduate. This will increase your chances of getting a job later.
I'm not sure what you're asking in your second question, are we talking about a last minute major change? If so, what's your current major? if it is something close to software engineering, then it might be ok. But in general, it's a bad idea to change your major in the last year. However, if you're talking about last year of high school, it is ok to start with software engineering because you'll learn almost everything from scratch. All you need to know is how to operate a computer

If you get possibly find an internship while in school or get lucky like i did and get into a company that will be flexible around school but let you be a programmer for them (they love to hire college students where i work (cheaper)) Then when you get out of college it wont be that hard to find a job.

If you are worried about the computer wizs i wouldnt be because when I started college i hadnt had any actual programming experience. Yes I was a geek and was always reading about computers but never actually did anything except HTML. So I say since you have a full year before you graduate just start learning now. there is so much info online that if you are a fast learner then you will be all caught up or atleast not far behind some of the. Oh yeah, and colleges dont start out expecting that you know what youa re doing. they think everyone is a beginner so dont feel bad about that.

Second, If you start learning now and decide Software Engineering isnt for you then atleast you haven't wasted any of your money in college working on a degree you don't think you would like. So just pick up a programming book or a tutorial online somewhere and start reading and see if you think it is something you want to do.

Bottom line is, all fields are competitive, its the nature of the beast The computer science field in particular is competitive world-wide. Just do your best and the rest will fall in your lap. Just because you didn't start writing code sooner means nothing, everyone starts from somewhere... just be dedicated and willing to learn.

Just for the record, and out of curiosity, what career choice is your father pushing? (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are still hot in Germany)
