Project Help Needed, PHP and MySQL and perhaps Perl
Perhaps cgi as well but i would prefer to stay away from that. If you could tell me if it as practical to try to add these things to the site or if i should just stay away from them, i don't want anything particually too hard to write.
Boards - currently my main concern there should be 3 boards Fighting, Trading and Chat, there isn't going to be a search function and inactive boards should get deleted after a certain amount of time has passed. for the topics to stop very long pages being made there should be 5 pages which hold 50 topics each also each individual topic has a max of 5 pages holding 25 posts each. (i think thats enough on the boards) games i would like to produce a stratergy style game to the site where as a few modifiers come into effect depending on certain events happening i'm not totally sure how to go about making this game, i'd want it to edit 2 database values depending on the score gained in the game. (i think i explained that enough as well but again if i didn't then please say) battles player vs player battles whereas items and attributes stored in a database affect attack and defencive values taken in rounds both players make the move damage is calculated and dealt to the correct player. hmm i'm not really sure whatelse to say about this thing to be honest. computershops - Perhaps! something i'm not entirly sure if i should add, each should would refill its stocks each 15mins or so (this might need some script thingy, i'm not sure) adding semi random items to the shop itself and creating a source of items for the game, i'd also considering making it so that the shops buy back some items to allow money to be created as well (of course for less than they are sold at) i would really like a way to control how many items are stocked but keep it a semi random amount what items are stocked but choose how many of each type (super rare, rare, common). again i think thats explained enough but maybe not guilds - Not Sure but would be a plus if its not too hard to code Guild home page designed by the creator of the guild but using a template set by me (eg choosing a few colours entering some text etc) and from the home page you can join therefore gaining access to the guild OR you can choose not to and not gain access. hmm. a private guild only message board and a events table (list with dates and event description etc) thats about it. oh yes and some admin powers for the guild owner concerning the guilds layout and members, being able to remove them from the guild putting them on a banned list and other such things. also i would like to monitor log ins and the ip of the user logging in. something like a cgi script could do that recording the ip, time and date and the username they used to log in with. this is so that i can stop people from cheating which might happen. oh and if you believe you can help could you put what varibles i might need to add to my database and why please at that would help, i almost put this in the projects forum as its more of an ongoing thing than a one off thread. this will get edited during the next week or so while i come up with new ideas and the such |

CGI is not a language, it is an interface. Any language such as PHP or Perl or C/C++ or whatever that conducts a typical transaction with an http client is using the CGI interface.

Ahhh, yes, Perl. I understand now; you mistakenly equated Perl with CGI. No sweat.

Ummmm, yep, they're linked. It's also linked to PHP, C, anything else you care to think of that acts as server-side code in the most typical type of usage. You DEFINITELY have a misperception. One CGI link.
