PHP dumbass questions

hi, PHP-knowing people. I've gotta problem with PHP, mainly that i dont know how to actually install/compile/set up the damn thing!
basically, what i'm looking for is a dumbed down set of instructions as to how to get started on learning PHP. The tutorials on PF are too vague and leave u with too many unanswered question, like the stuff about having to have a server (do u HAVE to upload stuff to a working server to check, or can u do it offline?). I've heard about PHPtriad but am unsure what it is. :-s

BTW, i DO have programming experience in Python, JS, and the standard xhtml/css.

If you are are running on Windows.

http://vertrigo.sourceforge.net/

Download it, and it's one simple install should get everything(Apache, PHP, & MySQL) working properly.

I dislike those Apache/PHP/MySQL packages - for one, most of them don't work, and secondly, you'll never understand how it works that way. Just download them all separately and we'll show you how it works.

i run Windows XP pro, but i do have Mandriva installation discs altho i wont be installing until i get a new machine.
I think i might get started with one of those package things if it does it all for me, ALTHOUGH i really wanna know how to do it myself, can u just list the steps for me or something? or a link to a good beginner's tutorials (PHP for Dummies?!)

The problem with the tutorials is they don't tell you what you could have done wrong when it doesn't work. I've spent days before trying to figure out what went wrong after going over the tutorial dozens of times.

I found that package and it worked fine, and I had installed Apahce/PHP/MySQL before so I wasn't worried about understanding it.

It's just PHP, MySQL, & Apache all packaged together in one installer, and it requires very little setup beside running the installer.

In other words it's the chicken way of installing PHP, Apache, & MySQL.
