The literal translation is "of many, one". Most literal translations suck rocks simply because that's the nature of languages. One saying in the USA, meaning to welcome, is "Roll out the red carpet." In certain parts of Mexico the phrase meaning the same thing is, "Throw the house out the window." Neither should be literally translated. As for "e pluribus unum," the phrase isn't so much a national motto as it is a saying in relation to coinage: one of many.
