Actually cold, you must have skill. You must be good at leaving little evidence, on the person(s) computer your are trying to get on to. Also if you are hackign to just hack , tat is bad. Hacking is supposed to be for people who dont like to be told what they can or can not do. Someone who gets thrilled when having broke past someones firewall, and seeing their secrets , that no one knows about. Also hackign is only bad if you make it that way. Lookign through some1 files is harmless. But if you use the info in thoise files. That is when it turns illegal. but remember always cover your tracks. Break into 2 or at least computers and go throguh there be4 you get on your victims computer. That way you will be harder to track.

You are talking about crackers.

But i take back my comment abotu not having skill because i beleive you do need to know your stuff and be able to program.

I don't get all the hype on hackers, most programmers can do it to some extent... i have quite a few friends that are all into it and i talk to them and stay up-to-date on some of the tools but i really don't try to do anything but learn. I still don't see anything in it except another juvenile thrill, like shoplifting...

I like hacking software I used to take apart all my games with hex editors and see what I could tweak.. now that takes some patience, I was able to completely change some games and others I'd just figure out some different places where stats and variables were. It's harder now though cause the games are so big (except most games are made to be easily modded.. but thats not the same when they WANT you to hack it)

All the hackers should turn there attention to something more productive. Hacking is a phase and as one gets older and more mature they will realize that its not worth their IT career. Its foolish to think you can land a security job if you hack a company's box then turn around and show them the exploit... Its a good source of entertainment at times, but then again... so is hardcore programming.

Yes, but the basics learned are a good source of knowledge for hardcore programming. (Let me classify hacking as tweaking and using of technology in an unintended or unexpected way, cracking is an compromising of security of a system whether yours or someone elses).

The basics of both are important so you can better design, and re-use system components and ensure that the desired system is secured, even if things are used in non-conventional manners.

That being said, I do not condone any hacking or cracking on others systems, or without permission. However knowing the basics can be immensly helpful.

I completely agree... hacking is a good learning tool for sure... because in the motivation and dedication of one wanting to be a hacker, they will learn many useful tricks along the way... even if they never successfully hack anything. However, I would suggest to those who "want to be a hacker" to avoid crossing into production level machines in another domain for learning purposes... and stick to their local boxes and go the "trial-and-error" route.
