Web Development
I am a total newb. I am seeking suggestions as to what books to purchase, and what websites to review to get started in programming. All criticism, suggestions, and direction will be most appreciated.

When I was starting with WebDev, I learned a lot of the basics from webmonkey.com. It's been years since I've actually used that site though, so I can't vouch for it's quality anymore. Really though, Googling for just about anything WebDev related will find tons of sites that can help you, most of which aren't half bad.

Oh yeah. I consulted with a friend of mine and he suggested to dig into HTML(XHTML), XML, PHP, and mySQL utilizing Apache. So, I got a book on all of them, a reference guide rather for HTML since I know a little bit, and what I like to call "THE RED BOOK" for the other.

Whatever u do dont buy HTML for Dummies or anything like it, it is just a waste of money.
You might want to try: Title: Creating a Web page with HTML / Author: Castro, Elizabeth. You could also try this: http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/ |

HTML is cake, since it's a markup language not a programming language. Familiarize yourself with HTML and XML. They're not all that different but they serve different purposes. Find yourself a copy of dreamweaver, it's the best for learning html.
Familiarize yourslef with CSS. I'm still looking for a good CSS book myself because I want to start designing without tables but I need to get a better grasp of the vast power of the <div> tag. Learn photoshop. Websites only look as cool as their graphics and your skill and respect will increase immensely if you know what you're doing. Get that and a copy of Adobe Photoshop's Classroom in a Book. Well worth the money. Once you get that down and you start making some nice web pages, look deeper into programming. PHP Fast & Easy Web Development is an excellent book for testing the waters in PHP. Once you get through that a more comprehensive book would be good. PHP and MySQL web development is fantastic, I've learned soo much from this one. Aside from that, keep reading up on Photoshop, get some stuff by Bert Monroy, view html source on pages and when you can, try to pick up some SQL and Javascript stuff when it comes around. |

I've said this countless times: my favourite site on HTML, XHTML and CSS is HTMLSource. You might find something useful there too, Lich.
