Beginner

I am a total newb. I am seeking suggestions as to what books to purchase, and what websites to review to get started in programming. All criticism, suggestions, and direction will be most appreciated.

I recommend you learn Python. It's a very good language for beginners, and it's also quite useful. In fact, Google uses it a lot in their search engine.

Here is a link to a free e-book. It's a professional book you can buy in stores, but the author decided to make it freely available online.

I hear ya and I read some of the information from that website. I was told by a friend that I should just jump into C# and not learn Python. Didnt have time to ask him why. Is there a reason why I shouldnt learn Python and just jump into C#? or any other suggestion?

There are lots of differences between C# and Python. The biggest one is that C# is a compiled language and Python is an interpreted one. I guess it doesn't matter which you learn, but they're both useful.

C# is for applications.... Python is can do applications, but more so useful in scripting and such.

I got a book. Read through it some and liked it so far. Now to follow along with it I need to get a copy of Visual Stuido .Net Professional 2003. Anyone know where I can obtain a copy at a great deal?

I would suggest just getting Visual C# 2003 Standard - it's cheaper.

Maybe he could try the new 2005 free downloadable version? I'm sure most things from the book would work the same.
