hey, man, i'm 16 too, and i'd suggest python. from what i've read, heard and come to know, python is really simple, almost as good as anything else you might choose for beginner to intermediate stuff and its a good start in general. Not like VB, AVOID VISUAL BASIC, is what everyone told me. they said it teaches u bad habits what with everything being done for you by the interface and it's not strict enough (or something).
So yeah, Python. Check those links that big_k sent, thats how i decided on my programming life. and DEFNINTELY learn HTML, its as easy as it gets but really useful. Try some CSS after that; in fact it's so simple u ca learn it at the same time as HTML (to be honest it's just like writing sentences telling a browser what do to but without "is"'s and "are"'s and "do"'s). one really good book is "HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS" by Elizabeth Castro (see amazon). I'm reading that ATM and it's brill. well, there u go, there's my advice ![]() |

why dont you do ipt or something in high school. they usually give you html, and then php to build on, that would be a good start.
html is very easy, so start there. download Microsoft Front Page, and then once you're competent, download php4 or easyphp and incorporate some php into it. |

?!?!
Since when is HTML considered a programming language? It teaches you nothing about programming. That's like saying taking a piss teaches you about plumbing.

I agree with uman, but less agressively
. HTML teaches you nothing about programmingm - programming is logical, and HTML is not. Maybe you could incorporate javascript into HTML to learn that.

its always best to know some html before you learn a programming language like php. you cant go and tell some kid to learn php or java unless they have some sort of coding knowledge.

Obviously HTML is a prerequisite to the PHP Hypertext Preprocessor, that proves nothing. Not so for Java. What does knowing HTML teach you about "coding knowledge" anyway? I only know a very tiny bit of HTML and I can still program in C++ just fine.
Oh, and last I checked Java is a world-renowned teaching language. In any case teaching programming with Java is better than teaching it with a content-presentation system. Do you see my point? Calling HTML programming is like calling PowerPoint programming. Just because you have to use a text editor does NOT make it programming.

I think foxcity meant to put JavaSCRIPT, uman, excuse him this slip of the fingers ...
and on the subject of programming, I do agree (X)HTML and CSS arent programming languages but almost every programmer is expected to be able to read and understand them so, u know, i think everyone should start there. And i'm sticking to my suggestion of python, GO, PYTHON! http://www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/alan.gauld/ is excellent for beginners.

Learn XHTML & CSS. Skip HTML because XHTML will be the new standard and HTML will teach you bad habits. Such as using font tags. Go from there depending on what you want to do. Desktop or web.
