General web-programming question ^_^

Besides HTML, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to modern web design. I have been searching through this forum, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for. Which programming language would you reccommend for implimenting a search engine into a website? I am in the process of creating a rather large website, and a search engine is vital.

Also, with sites like MySpace, how is the whole messaging other users/users having their own inbox etc. achieved? It baffles me, and it's overwhelming, but I'm sure some of you guys look at it and know exactly what's going on. Care to shed a little light on it for me?

Any replies would be great, because I haven't really got a clue what I'm doing at the minute. Thanks.

Well, Google uses PHP, Python and Perl to do most of their stuff - check 'em out, and pick one. MSN uses ASP, but that's because Microsoft created the language. Most forums (such as this one, for example) and blogs use PHP.

try php.

It's pretty easy to pick up the basics.

then learn a sql language. (what I really need to do) :p And when I mean learn it, I mean learn how to use it with programming languages, and in detail because you'll need for databases which handle the kind of stuff your wanting to do.

oh and you might want to look at xhtml and css.

I'm new myself to this stuff but if you got any questions feel free ask I'll do my best to answer, or I'll just take the easy way and say...GOOGLE!

A desktop program would be best for spidering the web as you would need to do for your search engine.

If you decide to learn PHP which I recommend. Don't use the PHP manual. It's a bad teaching tool. Find some tutorials with google and get to understand the basic structures of the langauge and then you can start using the PHP manual. You will find it to be one of your best friends.

How can i have a login in screen on my web page for different users. I need it so that I can put things on my site that can only be accessed by people who have logged in.

P.S.
I am not very good at understanding complicated things so try to make it kind of simple.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I've began some PHP learning via websites at this point, I might buy a book on it. Thanks for the help offer, dmorales, if I get stuck I'll certainly take up your offer!

Thanks again.
