for .htaccess you'll need to make sure your host let's you use them in your directories. If the server is not configured to use them, your going to be stuck with a javascript/php/whatwever solution.
.htaccess files are nice and quick to setup, and they provide a fairly high level of security. if you want a starting point for a php solution take a look at my code over here. It's a little rough around the edges, but it shoudl give you a good starting point.
