I wipe and re-install my pc nearly every month because I tent do install alot of programs and do alot of DVD encoding and video editing so my pc starts to run slowafter about a month. I have been doing it for the last couple of years now and just keep in the habbit. I have a 3.2 775 P4 Prescott, 1GB of Kingstone 400Mhz dual channel Memory, 200 GB Sata hard drive and gigabyte mainboard (can't remember the model number), but no matter how good you make it, DVD encoding always knocks the hell out of your PC, so I still just wipe and re-install my PC out of habbit.

I was out last night and I am stuck in work with the worlds worst hangover ever. I got in a 2.30 am and was up at 6 am this morning. I can see a half day holiday coming up now!!!

I have been using AVG for quite a while along with Outpost firewall and have been pleased with both. I bought a new laptop recently and it has Norton and McAfee pre-installed. So far they seem reliable enough, however I tend to lean toward what I'm used to so I'm sure I will switch at some point back to AVG/Outpost. I've heard good things about PC-cillin as well.

I used AVG for a long time until about six months ago (Right after they switched to 7.0) They limited the amount of concurrent uploads from their servers and it was near impossible to retrieve an update. Avast Home Edition is what I have been using until I read this. Avast Security Flaw Details You can download the newest version Here Which supposedly fixed the Device Driver memory overwrite vulnerability. If you are running a Microsoft box particularly NT based XP/2000 then I would suggest that you use anti-Spyware software. Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Microsoft's Anti-Spyware (Beta), and SpySweeper SpySweeper allows you one update and unlimited scans it requires you to register to receive any further updates. Personally, I run Spy-Sweeper, Ad-Aware, and SpyBot. My machine stays pretty clean. If you have any really persistent Mal-Ware, Hijack This is an excellent program to remove the stuff with, I would suggest you research before you remove anything though. Pest-Patrol has an Online Scan that requires you to install an activeX control but it will tell you what spy-ware you have installed and give you a little more insight into removal. As far as Firewall Software I use Jetico Personal Firewall Everyone has their own opinion on security software. These are just some options out there. Sorry this is such a long post.

I use Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and The Ultimate Troubleshooter on a regular basis, as well as the PC-cillin Internet Security thangy. I have a very clean system. I also clean up systems for nearly everyone in this small city. They accumulate so much stuff that their systems often become unusable. Hijack This is an excellent starting place for that sort of thing. There are additional programs for cleaning up malware socket stuff and for killing running processes that have enough copies running to prevent their being easily stopped and removed. I have come across only one item that all these things, in conjunction with Killbox, were unable to handle. It was the work of an obvious pro (it wasn't truly destructive as far as I could determine). It started up so early in the boot that it came up in safe mode, unlike almost anything else. It knew all about Killbox and subverted all its attempts to set it up for deletion on reboot. I had to go learn crap I didn't want to about the total XP boot process and write a killer myself. Fortunately, that level of penetration is, in my experience, relatively rare.

As far as Black Ice is concerned, unless they've changed their approach, they don't ride the outgoing comm from things that have gotten onto your system as well as they should.

Have a look at this for removing mailwear. I think it is the best one I have seen.

That program (xoftspy) is a freakin' liar in more ways than one. I clicked your link and downloaded the free trial and ran it. It told me I had a worm in the registry in a place I check regularly (the common ...\...\...\run... places). I took it at its word and went and looked. The registry key was as bare as a baby's butt. So I asked my self what would it do if I asked it to delete it. Here's what it did: told me I had to go pay for the program first. The effer is now gone from my system, never to return. Oh, it also would have hijacked my browser home page to MSN if I had gone with the default setup.

I wouldn't trust any program with a website that crappy to touch my system in the way it should be.

prodigy27c, these are all you'll need:
Ad-Aware
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Well, if you get some really tough stuff you might need HijackThis, LSPFix, and Killbox, but that's pooty rare.

Ooble, There the ones I do use. I just found Xoftspy by recommendation and have used it a couple of times. I just found it updated definitions before ad-ware.

Just Use Norton Anti-virus. Because Norton Anti Virus(any version) is the best.
