I currently use Trend Micro Internet Security (which includes both firewall and virus scanner). Before that I used PC-cillin for virus scanning (and ZoneAlarm for the firewall).

Both products are fine for general use. Both do virus scanning in "real time" which (essentially) means they scan files as you open them. My only quibble is that I find the automatic update function of Trend Micro Internet Security a bit annoying (as it pops up and grabs keyboard focus, which is a bit irritating if I'm busily typing away in another application).

Scanning 25 GB of data for viruses (virii?) is something I'd suggest doing overnight, regardless of what product you use.

Actually, I said PC-cillin, but I'm using the Internet Security model that Grumpy mentions. I also mentioned the updating thing as bugging me (see post #2). I decided to take five minutes to look through "preferences" and the update can be set to happen automatically without asking. I believe I'm going to be very happy with it. I have it set to do complete system scans at 1:00 AM on Sunday mornings.

I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which is an excellent firewall and a mediocre antivirus. As I haven't had a virus in over a year, I'm not too bothered about that. And BTW, it's "viruses": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plural_of_virus. If it was Latin based, it would be "viri", not "virii", as the singular version isn't "virius".

I use McAfee Internet Security, only because it looks good. I haven't had a virus in over two years which is how long I have been using it for, so that is probably why i have stuck to it. But to be honest I don't really bother about firewalls and virus scanners. I wipe and re-install windows monthly.

Can I ask why you wipe your OS monthly? That's a hell of a lot of maintenance.

Incidentally, Dragon, I'm very pleased with the PC-cillin Internet Security thangy. I went ahead and bought it after the trial period.

I generally tend to wipe my Windows partition every six months or so, because by that time I've installed so many things I either need to change HD or it's going slower than the teacup ride. Wiping it monthly is pointless unless you're a spyware magnet.
