Nonsense Name generator program
Hi Newbie user here.
I have created a Nonsense Name generator program. The problem is it gives some good names and others which can not even be pronounced. Heres how it works: It picks two random syllables from a txt file and concatenates it to generate the nonsense word. Examples:kitaaf lexduo desdoi tissal zaifal iuilal wukyom iumaau oucxou raopuo However when i pick three syllables the words becom more "unpronounciable" and arent any fun at all :mad: Examples:xelvujtol vuhrukaas buooeusuh hilvaycou gurguhood fuocuxaee My Question: How the hell do i tweak my program so that i can create words that can be pronounced? You need to get a clear map in your head of what a pronouncable word is, and what some rules for pronouncing words are. For example, you may not be able to have a syllable ending in z next to a syllable beginning with p, or you may have to have a certain number of vowels in a word. Making "pronouncable" words might be a little tougher than you think.
Alternatively, you could make a semi-intelligent algorithm to "learn" which words can be pronounced easily. By generating some statistics about words from the dictionary (or maybe just random nonsense words) such as vowel:consonant ratio, number of repeated letters/syllables, length, character counts etc, you could log some statistics about words. Then the computer could analyse this data in comparison with how easy you found it to pronounce the word (that information would have to be input manually) and generate a "formula" for pronouncable words, which it could later use to generate pronouncable nonsense words.

I think you need to look at Lexicography and Linguistics. You would, I will guess, get more pronouncable 'gobbledygook' words the less you chop them up. Or rather, the larger your real word fragments, the better. You could also adopt a system of beginning or ending your words with commonly used beginnings and endings. Also it could be useful to determine which phonemes "go together" and which do not. |

I think you need to spend a quarter and buy about twice as much sense as you currently have. Did it not occur to you that you could post part of that like this?

alright, you now have a 'random string of letters' generator. You'd need to look into lexographical rules, and grammar, for whatever language you're writing a generator in. Also, don't use syllables that would never appear, such as 'zeq' or 'xeg' i can't think of any 'normal' sounding names with those syllables.

Think of creating some variation of a Markov program to generate words based on a collection of proper speech/words, say a dictionary or large literary work. It will improve your chances of producing workable results.
BTW, that was a quick google search result I provided, a search on 'Markov Chanining' should produce some decent references. |
