What programming languages should I learn?

I am an owner of a multimedia and web development company. I am going to learn the basics of PHP. Currently I hire people on contract to do that kind of work for me. I am also an inventor, and have experience with electronics. There are two things I want to do with programming. Make applications to help with my business, things like analyze website the way I want, log file analyzer, and other things.

I also want to be able to use a computer or PDA to control servos and sensors. I have heard that basic stamp can do that, but that it is very limited? Maybe Assembly and C++?

My programming experience includes basic on a commodore 64 when I was 14. Actually got pretty good at that. More recently I am learning PHP, just scratching the surface right now.

So what do you think? What programming languages should I learn? Bonus question, any good Internet resources or books to learn the languages you recommend?

Thanks

I would suggest going with the three you mentioned: Assembly, C++ and PHP. They're all very widely used, and they pay very well.

Can I use C++ and assembley to devlop for Linux, Windows, and Macs? Are there any good free programs you would recomend for developing aplications? I prefer to use Open source when ever I can.

Thanks for you help.

If you download SharpDevelop, you can program in .NET, which runs on Linux, Windows, and Macs via the Mono project. Unfortunantly, they are in VB and C#; these are almost as powerful as C++, though.

I would recommend using C++, as you seem to be going on that path anyway. And yes, you can code for almost any OS using C++ and ASM.

for website analyses and such, you might want to stick with PHP and check out Perl as well.
